I feel like there’s been a Global Shift towards veganism and I love it!
So I’ve only been a vegan for 7 months now but even in those 7 months, veganism has become more and more popular!
At first I thought it was just because I am one now, that I’m more aware of it around me, but no, the world has definitely become more open minded to it! <3
When I first went vegetarian 5 years ago, people would constantly question me why I’d do such a thing, they’d try and get me to eat meat again and I’d CONSTANTLY find myself in debates trying to defend my own choice not to eat animals…it was tiring!
However, the response I’ve had from people when I’ve told them that I’m a vegan has been so positive (sadly surprising to me).
Rather than aggressively questioning my life choices, they’ve been interested in why, and how I’ve been finding it and of course, what I eat… but generally people are impressed and admire the strength it takes to do it.
It seems that people are turning a blind eye to the animal cruelty in the world, and more people are learning about all of the health and environmental benefits of a plant-based diet.
There have been so many documentaries (What the Health & Cowspiracy being the most popular two) exposing the cruelty in the meat/egg/fish industry, and about how detrimental meat can be to your health, that you just can’t ignore it anymore.
I feel like everywhere I look there’s mentions of ‘veganism’, ‘plant-based’, ‘cruelty-free’, ‘milk-free’, ‘egg-free’, ‘animal rights’ etc….
I remember when I first went vegetarian in 2011, it was a struggle.
Many restaurants I visited, didn’t even have a vegetarian option, other than a side salad or chips. But now there are often just as many vegetarian options than meat/fish options.
I really thought that my social life would suffer went I converted, but nothings changed!
Nowadays, so many restaurants cater for vegans, with a lot of them even putting together whole separate vegan menus with a lovely array of choices.
Many of them also put notes on the menu to say that certain meals can be ‘veganised’.
Most of the popular chain restaurants are being more thoughtful towards the vegan diet, including Nandos, Wagamamas, Pho, Pizza Express, Pizza Hut, Chipotle, Wahaca, GBK, IKEA, even McDonalds are trialing a vegan burger!
There are loads of vegetarian/vegan restaurants popping up all over the place, and so many meat eaters I know still love to visit them and try something new!
Mildred’s is a popular one just down the road from my work, and many of my colleagues go there for a nice healthy and delicious meal 🙂
I have been SO impressed with all of the supermarkets recently as they’ve all been bringing out new vegan products on a regular basis!
Nearly every time I visit the local Sainsburys, I find something new.
Just last week I was in there and not only have they got their own full vegan range of cheeses, they’ve even started to incorporate it into some ready meals – Mac & Cheese, Lasagna, Cheese & Onion bakes… the list goes on!
There are whole sections for ‘free-from’ foods, where you can find most things veganised, so you really don’t have to miss out on anything anymore 🙂
Many of the big brands have released vegan products too – both Ben & Jerry’s have released a number of different almond-based ice creams (which are AMAZING) and Cornetto have released a vegan ice cream.
I’ve also noticed that many of the supermarkets’ marketing are also focusing more on a vegan diet with sponsored Instagram posts highlighting vegan recipes and meals that you can make with their products.
On the Tube
I’ve been seeing loads of adverts for converting to veganism!
Some exposing the animal cruelty behind the dairy and meat trade.
Some showing the environmental benefits of veganism.
Some showing the health benefits.
ALL THE BENEFITS!
When you’ve forgotten your headphones, your book, and are trying to avoid all eye contact with everyone else on the train – where else are you going to look? At the ads!
I’ve been seeing so many adverts for plant-based products, for products which aren’t tested on animals, for animal charities etc.
Even Nike featured an NBA star Kyrie in one of their adverts, who accredits his abilities to something simple – a plant-based diet.
Last week I was in central London having dinner, and on the way back to the station I walked past a group of activists with masks on, holding laptops showing videos of what really happens in egg and dairy farms.
They had signs saying things like ‘would you want this done to you?’, and were handing out leaflets with some information, and for talks they were doing on veganism and the cruelty in the meat/egg/dairy industries.
The best part is that there were actually people stood around watching and reading the signs, not just ignoring it while they nommed down a burger from McDonalds.
Also, a couple weeks ago on my way to the station after work, I walked past a group of people RIGHT OUTSIDE the big Canada Goose store (VOM) with big illuminated letters spelling out ‘CG KILLS’.
It made my day!!!
They were shouting ‘Canada Goose kills’, and shouting out about how many animals they kill just to make one coat.
More people are becoming aware of the animal cruelty that happens every day, and are doing something about it.
I feel like the world is becoming more compassionate to animals and it’s making me really happy.
The more vegans there are in the world to cater to, the more plant-based products will be produced, the less animals that are harmed <3
Of course you are always going to have those negative, narrow minded people who just don’t get it, but you just got to think of the positives 🙂
There is progress for sure and every single person who turns vegan, or even turns vegan for 1 day a week, is a whole lot of animals saved <3
If you’re still here, thanks for reading my rantings! I’d love to know whether you feel the same?
Have a good day, and here’s a pic of a happy piglet eating ice cream 🙂
